The travel bug bit me hard a few years ago. I love adventure, crave the open roads, and genuinely love to get away. We started off with close to home travel...Day trips to cities that were only two to three hours from home.
Branson was one of our top places to visit...it also helped that we are season pass holders to Silver Dollar City.
(Silver Dollar City // 3.5 hours away)
After taking baby steps in the travel department...we worked our way up to some epic road trips! Last summer we logged in 70+ hours in the car, sometimes for 15+ hours at a time.
(Panama City, FL drove straight home 15+ hours)
In case you didn’t know already, we have four children. They are champion travelers.
I’ve also learned a few travel tricks over the last few years...these tricks help travel go a little smoother.
With the help of Hiland Dairy...I’m going to share with you my road trip secrets.
- When you travel with children, especially younger children, it’s always best to travel when they have the chance to sleep. So schedule shorter road trips where nap time might bud up to travel time.
In our house, my husband is an early riser...like 4:30am riser (gross, I know.)...so if he gets up at 4 am, he’s only getting up 30 minutes earlier that he usually does and kids don’t wake up until 8/9 most days...so by the time they wake up, 4-5 hours of the trip is already over with.
(Silver Lake Sand Dunes, MI // left at 4am)
2.) When trying to cut out a majority of the drive in one day, we try to stop as little as possible. This means a lot of eating in the car. I try to have a delicious breakfast that can be easily prepared and offers nutrition, and I usually hold off for at least a hour after my kiddos wake up to offer up breakfast.
One of my go to “breakfast in the car meals” is bagels + Hiland Dairy butter + Hiland Dairy milk. Hiland Dairy single serving milk has 16 grams of protein! Just do a little google search and you’ll see butter has a good amount of health benefits too. Butter can also be store for a few days at room temperature...so long as it doesn’t get about 70 degrees.
3.) Invest in a few baking tins...and by “invest” I mean pick some up at the local dollar store. These tins will make your travel a thousand times easier. They can serve as meal trays, help keep your car clean, hey help little hands contain their food. They also serve as a tray to contain toys!
4.) Speaking of Toys. I always try to have something new for road trips...something they’ve never seen before. Again, these do NOT have to be expensive...pick up goodies from the dollar store, the dollar section, Birthday party stores. The best part is when theses trinkets cost but a dollar it’s isn’t a big deal if they break or get lost. Stickers, silly putty, coloring books, blocks, and games are always a hit. Using the tray to hold the toys...offers a safe place to play on the child’s lap.
5.) Early, I mentioned traveling with Milk. Clearly, milk needs to be kept cold. I try and free up as much space and I can, so one road travel hack I’d like to share is SKIP the ice packs + bags of ice. FREEZE bottles of water instead. This helps conserve space and keeps your Hiland Dairy Milk cold. Plus, your water stays nice and cold.
Now that you are armed with 5 super helpful tips to make your traveling go smoother, you can enjoy the ride of your life!!
Whether that ride be a road trip close to home like Silver Dollar City for me, or a road trip far away like the beauty of the Grand Canyon, be sure to pack a hearty breakfast that can be eaten in the car...a breakfast like bagels + Hiland Dairy milk + Hiland Dairy butter.
Friends! Be sure to enter the Hiland Dairy contest! You could win a family road trip to Silver Dollar City to ride the new Time Traveler roller coaster.
( Ferris wheel in Silver Dollar City!)
(Lyla’s first roller coaster in Silver Dollar City)
Hiland Dairy has collaborated with SDC to create a new Time Traveler ice cream flavor to celebrate the new coaster.
I’ve devoured the Outlaw Run ice cream last year ( in celebration of the of the Outlaw rollarcoaster at SDC) because ice cream is my jam. In fact, I made dipped cones to pair with this yummy flavor last year. You can find the recipe here.
