A little lesser known National Park : Lassen National Park. Base is beautiful, you can visit Helen Lake or you can keep going and hike a volcano! It's 2.5 miles , 5 miles rounds trip. It wasn't a hard hike BUT I do recommend having some snow spikes, because in July parts of the path were still icy. We were unprepared for this but we still managed.
Don't forget the sunscreen.
Make note there were lots and lots of bees (harmless, but still present)
When you get to top take in the view and if it's summer build a snowman in shorts!
